Marlins walk-off celebration involves player losing his jersey
Teams celebrate walk-offs in various ways. All of them involve a huddle at home plate, but some clubs add small changes on top of that to make the celebration their own. Some of those include: knocking your teammates down with a monstrous leap, taking a jump shot with your helmet and covering your teammate in chocolate syrup (don’t ask).
The Miami Marlins didn’t use any props or come up with any elaborate skits during Sunday’s walk-off, but they still found a way to make it memorable.
With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, infielder Derek Dietrich stepped to the plate with two outs and a man on first. With a triple, he could win the game.
On the second pitch of the at-bat, Dietrich hit a liner out to left center. St. Louis Cardinals outfielders Tommy Pham and Jeremy Hazelbaker converged on the ball, but didn’t get there in time. Hazelbaker appeared to pull up either because Pham called him off, or because he was trying to avoid a major collision. Pham attempted to dive to make the catch, but just missed the ball.
As a result, Adeiny Hechavarria was able to easily score from first, giving Dietrich both a triple and his first-ever walk-off hit. The Marlins won the contest 5-4.
The Marlins celebrated as most teams do, mobbing Dietrich at the plate. During the mobbing, things got weird. A couple Marlins players got together and ripped Dietrich’s jersey off.
Once Dietrich realized he was powerless to stop his teammates, he cast the jersey aside and jumped in the air with a primal yell.
Dietrich seemed to embrace the whole thing. Can you blame him? It’s looks like he has an eight pack. Goodness. Derek Dietrich definitely works out.
